Me, I got nothin’. The last time I mentioned Skimmer I told you I had to do some knitting math before I could knit, and I still haven’t had time to do that. Or haven’t made time. Or something. Whatever the circumstance, it hasn’t happened, so this issue is on you. Tell me what you got!

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here’s how to play:
Take a picture of your current project, whatever that happens to be. Or maybe one you recently finished. Or the materials for the one you are about to start. Let’s say materials for a project in whatever state it happens to be in at the time you snap it. On Friday, post the picture and tell us about your project. What you did, or what you are going to do. How much you are enjoying it, or hating it. You know–show and tell.
Well, I’m sad-sack late getting this edition out. For that I apologize. I have revamped my schedule and most of my blogging happens in the evening now. Which works better for the house and family, but maybe not so well for those of you (Hi Mama) who expect this post to come out early. How about I just set it to auto publish bare bones at midnight on Thursdays, so you at least have somewhere to drop a link, and I will come back and edit it when I can get here? Maybe if I get my act together, I can publish it intact at midnight Thursday night. Wouldn’t that be the be all and end all?
As for Skimmer, well, I forgot until yesterday to add knitting into my schedule, and I was ateh short row bust, so it wasn’t like I could pick it up during school and just start going round and round like I had been doing, so. Umm, all I got done was h eshort row bust like i laid out for you two weeks ago, and then to knit back around to the right arm and then purl back to the beginning of the round. We’ll pick up here with some shaping, counting this coming row as row 1. Hold on and read through it, and feel free to ask any questions.
The next measure you will need is the distance from your nipple to your shoulders. Mine happens to be 10 inches (yeah, I’m short) so I know the top of my sweater is 10 inches tall, and I’ll have a 24 inch length of sweater when I am done. You also need to know how wide your shoulders are. Mine happen to be 15 inches, and I’ll be decreasing to meet that measurement. I have to get from 83 to 71 stitches (allowing about an inch of ease), so I’ll be decreasing every 4th row: 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21 one stitch on either side of the sweater. AT THE SAME TIME, increase in the middle of the row: every 4th row for a loose cowl neck and every other row for a very loose cowl.
No pictures, this week from me, my sweater looks about the same. I’m still debating which neck line I want, anyway. What have you been working on?
Well, how are are you? I’m a busy bee as you know if you’ve been looking at my pictures. I’ve not been knitting as much as I usually do, because so much else has been going on. However, I am through with the body on Skimmer! It looks like this:
IMG 0354
I don’t know why I thought holding it up against me would make a good picture, but there it is, nonetheless.
So! If you are knitting along with me, we are ready to make the boobs. We are going to short row those, kinda like Mariposa. If you have made this sweater as form fitting as I said originally, you will definitely be needing some short row-age. I don’t think you’ll be able to get anything beyond a wannabe-A in there without them. Our sweater isn’t adjustable so we are going to have to build more than just darts. We actually have to build a <>, and so we will use 2 times the rows that the pattern recommends, and start from middle.
Go ahead and divide the sweater front front and back, work an inch past the middle front, wrap and turn, and work 2 inches, wrap and turn, work an inch past the first wrap (picking up the old wrap as you go) and wrap and turn. Work back to an inch past the second wrap (picking up the wrap as you go). Continue in this way,
4 rows for an A
8 rows for a B
12 rows for a C
16 rows for a D
and 20 rows for a DD
If you are bigger than a DD, you’ve already been doing this kind of math and probably don’t need my help. These numbers are based on worsted gauge, so if you are using something else, adjust accordingly. That completes the \__/ and now we just go back the other way for the /–\ (dang my inability to just reach out and DRAW a shape on the internets!). So instead of going wider and wider, we’ll go an inch less with each row. When you get to that pivot row, you won’t be able to pick up the wraps anymore, obviously, so well pick them up on the next pass. Also, as you pass that row, you should start seeing a bra shape form in the sweater.
Ok, I think I have sufficiently muddied the waters for ya! If you are indeed knitting along and you don’t understand what I have said, please, please, PLEASE! leave a question in the comments. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Also, next week, I will try to post some closeups of my work so you can have a look at what should be happening.
So. Here we are. I hope your crafty week was a bit better than mine! Did I mention that I ripped my sweater back twice? Yeah. The good news is that I am finally on round 52. The bad news is that if I hadn’t had to rip it twice I’d be through with the short-row boobs by now. I am beyond disgusted and trying really hard to fall back in love with this sweater. If you were knitting with me based on my instructions last week, just keep going to right under the boobs and wait. I’ll have the next instruction next Friday OR I’ll have a new project. And that’s enough about that.
Ok, one more thing– and it’s a biggie. In fact, it’s stupendous. It’s part of the reason I am threatening Skimmer with abandonment. It’s … More Big Girl Knits, and I am going to tell you all about it in the next post, and then I am going to give it away! Hang tight, ya’ll!
This week, there were a few stitches on a complicated cross-stitch, and several rows on the log cabin blanket, and then there was this:
IMG 0264 IMG 0265
Neither of these pictures adequately portrays the wonderfulness of color in this yarn, and that is why you get two. I am making a sweater for myself, and I have started by casting on the exact number of stitches I need to go around my hips at the point that is most flattering for a shirt to end on me. And by exact number, I mean not one more than necessary. And I am decreasing (4 stitches every 10th row) to the exact number of stitches plus one inch that it takes to go around my ribcage just under my breasts. I am calling this sweater The Skimmer, and when you see it, you will totally understand why. And you will also want one. Go ahead and get started, using the directions above, LOL! Once you get it as long as you want to the underarm, stop and wait for me.
Ooh, I was crafty this week! I had a great deal of fun, and I hope you had a satisfying week as well, no matter what your creative passion.
The first thing I finished was this apron for my mother. She cut up a pair of pants and brought it over here for me to sew up. It seems almost cheating to claim it, but I did make it, so……..yeah. It goes on the FO page. I’ll justify it by saying that she wanted me to throw it together any old way, and I refused to do that, but instead took the time to sew it properly, with finished seams, etc. It’s small because it’s not for cooking. She needs it to hold change at the estate sale she’s having this weekend. She wants to sell everything that’s not nailed down at Grandmother’s, though if you were to call and make an offer on the exterior shutters, I imagine she’d get a hammer and un-nail them for you. Unless it is raining. Then, it would be no.
IMG 0237 1
I did learn a new thing making it. I’ve been sewing for 26 years, give or take. Any time I have wanted to reinforce a seam, I have dutifully cut the threads, place the piece back on the feed dog at the point of origin, and sewed. Mama watched me do that several times (umm, it takes plenty of reinforcement for the bottom of a change apron), and asked me why I didn’t just turn the fabric. I looked at her as if she had 2 heads, mumbled “turn the fabric”, lifted the presser foot, flipped that piece and sewed on! I’d always wondered why it took me so long to sew stuff compared to Grandmother. That trick was one Mama learned from her. Mama can’t sew, but I can, and it’s a trick I will get some good use from!!
Next up is Spidey’s sweater. Yes, he’s elected to keep it. I did run out of yarn, so I grabbed some black Cascade 220 and used it doubled to finish the yoke.
And now, I am looking for a new project. It will have to be an old one, or at least one made from old yarn, since I am still on purchasing hiatus. The good news is that these are FOs 5 and 6: soon, my pretties, soon, I will be able to shop!
Here is the progress on the current sweater, which may or may not end up belonging to Spidey. I have about an inch to go on this yellow sleeve, and then I will make a black one. I had meant to at least get that started last night, but I cut the end of my thumb. Do you know how often you use the tip of your thumb? It’s a lot. It’s a major functionary portion of the total body. Just sayin’ Also, I cut it on ICE. That’s right, I am special, thanks for noticing!
Oh ya’ll. The stuffed up sinus thing has begun. I haven’t slept properly in two nights. I have no witty rejoinders today, only pictures.
The modeled Wallaby:
IMG 0154
A close-up of the finished Sonnet:
IMG 0157
After I finished these, I worked some on the scrap blanket. I think I will begin to re-make Spidey’s striped sweater shortly. I plan to model it after sweetness.
I also want to do a little (ok, a lot) of work on the craft area. I don;t suppose it’s logical to buy a couple of those big parrot cages to store my yarn in, right? What about a smaller bird cage that I could suspend from the ceiling? Yeah, you know that would be gor-jus. My cousin uses one to hold candles and colored stones in her living room, and it is so attractive and unique. I think hanks of yarn would look so good half falling out of the slots, don’t you?
Now, what have you been up to?
