On Raising Badgers

Are we gonna have our new tent?
Are you gonna put them both up?
Did you buy the chocolate?
We need more marshmallows!!!!
Can the girls sleep in the old tent and you and Dad sleep in the new one with the boys?
Can I invite abc?
Can xyz come?
Is Dad gonna watch the race outside? Are we putting the tv in the tent?
What are we going to eat?
When will we put up the tent?
We NEED chocolate!

And folks, it’s been like this since Monday. I’m raising badgers here, I tell ya. Badgers!

And also, shopping

hahahah, apparently, I have used that title before, since the editor recognized it and supplied the last word. I guess I really do shop a lot, which is what I left of the list in the previous post. Now, for a change, I have NOT been shopping for clothes or shoes. I am, in fact, strictly forbidden to purchase, for cash OR credit, any shoes or clothing for ANYBODY until after the Indy 500. Umm, can anybody tell that I am married to a NASCAR fanatic? Yeah? Thought so. Also, the shopping I did to earn this edict?? Totally worth it! ;)

src 20220What I have been shopping for is camping gear and bedding. I really want to re-do my bedroom (have I mentioned that?? I can’t remember.), and dh and I have been looking at comforters and quilts and just suck as that. I am also planning to get some pillows and curtains. We’ve mostly settled on a country blue scheme and I think this swatch might work nicely, depending on our final selection for the bedding. I like that these guys will make the curtains to my measurements. Right now, my curtains pool on the floor, and that is ok, because they are sheers. My life has changed since I got those curtains, and I now have many, many children who can open the door for themselves, and I am definately feeling the need for more solid curtains. In fact, I now have a towel draped over my window to augment said sheers–high class, that’s me, but at least the only full moon my kids see back there is the one in the sky!

Stitching?

What’s that? I seriously cannot remember the last time I knit. It’s not been, like, months, or anything, and I could scroll back through a couple of pages and find out, but I do know that, at least for me, it’s been a long time. I’ve just been busy doing other things: reading, teaching, cooking, living real life. It’s a dilemma, see, for a blogger. I can either write about life, or live it. In some seasons, there just isn’t time to do both, and then we get what we have had lately: Silence punctuated by brief spurts of activity.

The good news is that the forecast looks very pleasant, and I’m hoping to get in a bit of knitting time at camp this weekend. We’ll see how that goes ;)

Cher is back!

Do you remember that I went to Vegas last fall. Of course you do, how could anyone possibly forget that *I went to Vegas*. I blogged some about it here, and quite a bit about it on my other blog, but I am pretty sure I mentioned seeing not-Toby, not-Elvis and even not-Michael there in the casino of my hotel. (Hotel seems such a pitifully small word to describe the lodgings in las Vegas. Each one is like it’s own resort, a self contained eating/sleeping/playing facility.) The performers looked like they were having fun, though who knows how they really felt. It was fun to watch them dealing and then singing a quick set, any way.

I also saw not-Cher. Man, she was beautiful in that gold lame dress and that long black curly hair. I kid you not, she was the first one I saw, and it took me a few seconds to figure out what was going on, yk? I was reminded of her when I read today that Cher is actually playing Vegas later this year. Not not-Cher, but the real deal. That’s right, you can get Cher tickets at Caesar’s Palace Las Vegas!

I guess I am showing my age, but I really do prefer her earlier music. That wildness on Half Breed, and that warm fuzzy loving thing she had with Sonny in I Got You, Babe. Defining songs of the era, I think. Yep, I can still sing the one and hum the other, but I’ll leave it to you to decide which is which. I will admit to dancing through the kitchen this afternoon belting out It’s in His Kiss. Don’t tell the kids–it really embarrasses them when I do that, ykwim?

Another Bridge Crossed

So, uh, Country, she has a paper to write for school this week. She has elected to type it in Word. And when she has made her final corrections, she is going to email it to me. My daughter is now emailing her work to me. Welcome to my brave new world.

Grilled Asparagus? and a Grilling GiveAway

Bobby Flay s Grill ItYes, among other things! Remember I said we were camping this weekend? That means constant grilling, so when I got a chance to check out Bobby Flay’s Grill It!, I leapt at it. I truly was not disappointed. Beginning with a discussion of the type of grills, and ending with recipes organized by main ingredient, this book rocks!

Now, I had a pretty good idea of what we’d be cooking while we camped before I opened the book. Did I change a few things? Sure! But I also plan to just adapt some of the things we were already having. For instance, I had planned on steak and baked potatoes. We’ll still have the steak, except I also plan to serve it with Balsamic-Rosemary Butter. And asparagus ;)

And the chicken? Well, that’s likely to become Chipotle-Honey Glazed wings, except I’ll need to use green chiles so the kids can take the heat.

And fruit! Not for camping, mind you, but just in general. It never occurred to me to grill fruit, but somehow those peaches with the grate lines on it just looked so … right, somehow. And the Grilled Banana and Nutella Panini? That’s breakfast right there, ya’ll. And Mushroom tacos? I didn’t think so either, but after reading the recipe, I’m thinking a different think. And 9, count them, N-I-N-E ways to grill salmon. And shrimp.

And then, there is the chapter on eggplant and squashes, which happen to be some of my favorite foods. And then there are the fish recipes. Have I said “and” enough? Can you totally tell I reviewed this book as I read it? Well, I have two more ands to go:

And I am getting me a gas grill as soon as I possibly can.

And I think I need to give a copy of this book away. We haven’t done that in a while, and I think the time has come. Here’s how to enter:

The contest will start when I hit publish, and will run through midnight June 1st. I’ll announce the winner via random number on Monday June 2nd. You can get an entry by commenting on this post. You can get another entry by “stumbling” this post. (You can use the button right under the post (or your toolbar) to do that.) You can get two more entries by writing about this give away on your own blog with a link back to this post. And let’s throw in an experimental entry method: if you are a member of a crafty or cooking type forum, and you post about this giveaway with a link back, you’ll get another entry. You’ll need to come back and let me know you’ve done that by leaving a link to your forum post in the comments.

If you have never commented on this blog before, then your comment will be moderated. I’ll approve it as soon as I get back to the keyboard :)

I think that’s enough fine print, let’s get started!

P.S. Thanks, Bobby for the tip on how to boil eggs on the grill.

Online Craft Club Show and Tell #32

Okay, remember that off hand comment I just made about HP? Well, that, combined with two days of sick kiddos means that, once again, I got nuthin’. Sorry. But I’m posting craft club anyway, because I assume that not everyone lives the crazy like I lead, and someone of you, somewhere might indeed have time to do something crafty! Please tell me this is so. Show me whatcha got!

Here’s how to play:

Take a picture of your current project, whatever that happens to be. Or maybe one you recently finished. Or the materials for the one you are about to start. Let’s say materials for a project in whatever state it happens to be in at the time you snap it. On Friday, post the picture and tell us about your project. What you did, or what you are going to do. How much you are enjoying it, or hating it. You know–show and tell.

Just copy & paste the code below the graphic and get crafty with me!

OOOh, almost camping time!

So, I flipped my calendar over this morning to make a note of something I need to remember, and guess what next weekend is? Yep, Memorial Day Weekend! And do you remember what happens on Memorial Day Weekend? We go backyard camping again! I’ll be spending a little time this coming week making final shopping lists and gathering supplies. We won’t have the financial wherewithall to get all the stuff on our wish list, of course, but we figure to get a couple of new items each month as we camp, and eventually we will have our whole kit. This month we’re getting our new tent (already on layaway) and maybe a dutch oven. The time has really slipped up on me, and I was practically sure we had at least two more weeks. In fact, I reminded dh just this morning that we needed to get the tent out “in a couple of weeks”.

I had hoped to enhance out collection of flashlights and lanterns, too but that may not be possible. Our tent actually has a power port in it (yeah, we really rough it–NOT), so we could even use golights. Those things ought to really light up a tent, don’t you think? We could even use one outside the tent to light up the yard, so we could play longer. Or read, LOL.

Because, have I mentioned that I am finally reading Harry Potter? Yes, I am. And I like it so far. I’ll be through with the first one before we camp, but I might be ready to read the second one by then.
