What I want to do with my leftover sock yarn is make little sock Christmas tree ornaments (I know... a little silly, but fun).

I would also consider making the cuffs of a fun yarn, and the rest out of a matching solid.

Or kids socks (maybe as I just mentioned)

I also just got a 4"x4" Weavette loom, and it only takes 7 yards or so (although I think sport or dk weight may be the ideal weight, I haven't yet tried doubling the yarn... but I did felt one of the squares I made, and that was kindof fun).

That's tough! You've done a hat. A scarf, wrap or blanket would be easy but they have a steek. You're pretty much left with mittens or socks. There really is no reason to be afraid of steeks.
