Well, I got the trick, and the second half of the leg went much faster. I took an extra second to make sure the needle I was stitching from was *above* the other needles, and that really made a difference in speed and comfort.

Picking. I always pick, unless I am doing something weird.

Just keep up your DPN "Practice". You said this was practicing a "new skill", right? It does get easier. Admittedly, its easier with shorter dpns (like sock dpns) Brittany Birch makes 5" dpns and I can fly on socks with those, and they do come in larger gauge than sock ;)
Also are you picking or throwing? I used to despise picking (continental) when using dpns, but with some practice, whoa...its just so much better!

I'd have to stop every 20 stitches instead of 15, LOL! I finished the first leg, and I'll tackle the second probably tomorrow. I kinda hit my stride with them, and it went pretty quickly after that :)

Hate fiddly too. What if you used a shorter cable, since it is only 39 stitches--like 24 in or so, instead of the 40 I'm using for my socks? I have a terrible time with dpns, especially the first few rows. Just a thought.....

oh, I just re-read that. I woul dnot have to use the other end to do one leg at a time that way :) But that extra loop of cable, when I am dealing with just 39 stitches is also quite fiddly. Have I mentioned I detest fiddly?

I considered magic looping, but elected not to. I'm using Lamb's Pride, and the twist on it gives a distinct look to the stitchs, so if I started using the other end of the skein (to magic loop) the stitches would show the difference.

I just learned that there is a way to knit small circumferences on one or two circular needles--instead of using the dreaded dpns. Why not give two circs or the magic loop a try instead. Here are some sites I found useful--they are written for socks, but would translate to other tubular objects.

http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/mloop.html

http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/advanced_techniques/

http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/twocirculars.html

http://www.tostetoes.com/onesockoneneedletoeup.htm

Hope these help! I just finished my first socks using the Magic Loop and am thrilled with how quickly and relatively painlessly it went.
